Halloween preparations & I feel sorry for my kids...

For more details on my FLIP Ultra HD giveaway, go here.

If you would like to participate in this "Creepy Crawly Crafts" carnival hosted by Mayhem & Moxie, glide on over and link up for 5 extra entries!

I feel a tad bit sorry for my kids.  They have a dead-beat Halloween mom.

That would be me.

There's no excuse for it.  Both my mom and my step mom always made Halloween super special for me.  Every year I was sewn a custom costume, I was feed ghoolish good food and taken to spooky parties.  Yet somehow the Halloween spirit didn't rub off on me and it's only a matter of time before my children realize this.

Instead of making costumes for my children or decking the house out with cobwebs and skeletons, I've........

....taken them to the grocery store to pick out their very own pumpkin.

{I should admit here that if the pumpkins were not on sale for 19 cents a pound I might have grumbled the whole time.  Clearly I'm a dead-beat Halloween mom AND I'm cheap.  Carving the pumpkins should be fun.  Can you hear my excitement?}

AND, I've allowed my children to pick out their very own costumes.  From the dress up box.  I'm generous that way.  I even let them keep the costumes they picked in a visible location so they have something to look forward to.  I know.  I know.  SUPER nice of me.

I just hope none of  my children's friends tell my kids what their mom does for them.  Because then they might realize that on Halloween, their mom pretty much sucks.  I'd prefer them to be ignorant on this subject, thank you very much.

There's always next year, though, right?

My Question for an entry in my Flip Giveaway is:  "If you were the owner of a Flip, what costumes would you be recording this year?"

Don't forget to visit Better in Bulk, Mama's Losin It and Mayhem & Moxie for more chances to win.

yeah, i can't muster much enthusiasm either. i mean, they eat enough candy year round without knockin' on doors for more!!!

lovin' the tootsie rolls btw!!!

Maybe it'll rub off the opposite way on them later on and they'll be all gun ho.

We are going to bee Bees, and my husband is going as Spiderman...again.

Unknown said...

We had a costume bag too & I can't tell you how many costumes were made solely using the pieces of junk in that bag!

Here's the great thing about kids... as long as they are getting the candy Halloween night, they don't much care how YOU go about celebrating with or for them. So, LUCKY YOU!

Za said...

I'll probably record the costumes that are not store bought but handmade. They tend to be more creative and a lot more dramatic and I think giving credit for effort is way important than perfect store bought costumes.

Scary Mommy said...

With 5 kids, you have earned the right not to have any excitement-- and just think of how green you're being with the costumes!

Justine said...

Okay, I thought I was bad at halloween, but you just plain suck!

If I had a flip camera I'd be recording Mikayla as a bee, Madison as a black cat and all the varied cute costumes I'll see in my neighborhood!

Justine :o )

Susie said...

Hey, at least you are actually planning on carving the pumpkins--that is my LEAST favorite thing about Halloween.

As for the FLIP question: well, I would be capturing the essence of Daphne, because I was too cheap to pitch in the $40!!! dollars for a Scooby-Doo costume.

My Halloween Mojo is totally missing-in-action this year;)

Jenn@ The Crazies said...

My oldest daughter is a Boxer, Jocelyn is a devil in a red dress and Trevor is a "rapper- thug".. lovely! Just what I wanted my 7 yr old to be!!! Ought to be interesting.. see... I totally need to record this!!

My dudes are all super heroes this year: #1 is Wolverine, with the homegrown hair to prove it, #2 is Robin, although in real life he would never be anybody's sidekick, #3 is Batman who had his costume hand selected by #2 because he loves having a slave, I mean a sidekick to do his bidding for him.

I'm a half-a$$ Halloweener too. I'm trying to do better now that I have Jackson... but I'm not having much luck.
I always have great intentions, and then time closes in, and costumes are hard to make, and pumpkins are messy to carve, and cobwebs are a pain to clean up.... and ya. I'm a total party pooper.

Maybe admitting it is the first step in getting better? ;)

Margaret said...

Don't feel bad I hate Halloween too.

The Black Sheep said...

Well, if I had a flip, I'd be recording my kids as Dora the Explorer and Spiderman! If I had a flip last weekend, I could have filmed a lot of blackmail at the halloween party my hubby & I went to at our friends house!!!

Unknown said...

My four lovely children are coordinating Star Wars characters this year. First time they've agreed to "match". I hope it turns out cute... for my sake. :D

Rhonda said...

Oh, I am so with you on this. Get this .... I'm not even LETTING Olivia pick. She gets whatever fits her this year from our halloween stash. I used to put out the scary music, and carve pumpkins and even dress up myself!! I seriously don't know what has happened to me! Sigh...

S Club Mama said...

Some friends gave us pumpkins. lol so you're ahead of me. And my mom goes ALL OUT for Halloween. It's her Christmas.

We would be recording our Wizard of Oz outfits. I'm so excited to be Dorothy!!! My mom never would've gone all out for my costumes growing up like she does now for the grandkids. :)

Ashley said...

If I had a flip camera I would could record all the cute little kids that come to the door all dressed up for candy this year !

Unknown said...

You sound JUST like me!!! We got our one and only pumpkin last night. I dragged the whole family (even one unwilling 12 year old) to the pumpkin patch...not to buy the expensive pumpkins, but simply to get pictures. And costumes? I have the bin, too. We have no idea what everyone is going to wear. They typically change their minds a dozen times before Halloween, anyway.

natalie said...

Oooh, yeah, we didn't even get pumpkins this year! GASP! In my defense, we'll be out of town, but really, I don't know if that's a good excuse...

I'd be recording the Good Witch from the Wizard of Oz, along with my sweet nieces, Dorothy and a Flying Monkey :)

Unknown said...

My sons are teenagers now so they do still like to dress up sometimes but I don't get to help anymore! Last year my 16 year old dressed up like the Joker, the Heath Ledger Joker and he was really scary. This year...I guess I 'll just have to wait and see.
jedoggett@embarqmail.com

Martha said...

Tara's not going to dress up this year, but our guinea pig has already dressed up like a cowboy... he would make a cute video running around. My great nephews are going to be two different versions of Spiderman!

Honey Mommy said...

If I were the owner of a flip, you would see my boys dressed as Buzz and Woody from Toy Story. Cute, huh?

Julie@My5monkeys said...

all my kids in their costumes and at the holiday parties. The kids have cute costumes.

Danyele Easterhaus said...

well, i would be recording some good old fashioned home made ones...we are gonna have us a few butterflies and a minnie mouse and "sandy" from grease...can't go wrong there!!!

Kacey said...

The lack of Halloween zest in regards to the costumes & decorating I will forgive....but Angie...pumpkins at the grocery store? Girlfriend! Get those kids to a pumpkin patch! LOL

Joy said...

Well my son is past the age of my picking anything halloween related out for him so I am left with my daughter. I wish I could video her in her Thumbalina (sp?) costume complete with her tutu made by mommy:)

T Rex Mom said...

We're still a dictatorship in this household - I pick decorations and costumes. Next year, though, I bet it will be different!

My Baby Girl is going to be Little Bo Peep and her baby brother (18 months) is going to be her sheep. I was proud because she came up with the idea all by herself. I love it!

The Absence of Alternatives said...

First of all, LOL at your post. I only displayed Pumpkins on the patio as decorations. Oh, and some caution tapes that we got at the dollar store and I just gave it to the kids and said, Go for it. So they did. If I had a FLIP, I'd be filming Elvis and Grim Reaper. I don't know what Husb will be this year. He does dress up every year, and my 6 grader is beginning to be embarrassed by it...

Elizabeth said...

I'm not into halloween either. I don't think our pumpkins will get carved. I'll put that off as long as possible. I'll be recording Elmo and a chicken.

Kelly Deneen Raymond said...

I will only call you a Halloween deadbeat mom if you hid from trick or treaters. :)

And why go through the pain of carving!? Give the kiddos some paint, and let them go to town. ;)

Amy said...

I have done just a little also. Have a great day..

Meg said...

Looks like the hubby is going as Top Gun/Tom Cruise. But cuter, obviously! I'm pretty sure I'm pulling out an old poodle skirt for mine!

kari bell said...

My husband and I are Bert & Ernie while the kids are a dragon and a butterfly.

Kim said...

We will have a ladybug, Princess and Jedi Knight here this year. I love it!

B's Mom said...

I can't remember growing up ever having a store bought costume. Then again I also can't remember my mom making costumes for us although she easily could have due to her sewing skills.

This year if I had a flip I would be recording pretty much everyone elses costumes. My beautiful 8 year old daughter will be dressed as the Red Power Ranger after I take her store bought costume up so it will fit her.

Susie said...

You know...the kids don't care about all the pomp and circumstance. They just like any and all holidays:-)

Michelle said...

Can I still be entered? We dont celebrate Halloween.

But I will buy some clearance costumes, after halloween, to put in the dress up box and I may take pictures of those.

Rachel Berry said...

I'm only making one costume this year. The other 4 are store bought. And I could care less about the whole Halloween thing going on. Ever since I had a Halloween Baby, Halloween just takes on a whole new dimension of stress.

I'm a terrible mother as Addison's B-day is a mere 4 days away and I have nothing planned for it.... yet.....

ETsmommy said...

If I had a Flip video camera, I would be recording Ethan in his 'Incredible Hulk' costume.. (Well, I would be loan it to the grandparents for them to record it, as hubby and I will be out of town).. But either way, it would get recorded!!

Stu Pidasso said...

All the freakiest ones I could find on 6th Street in Austin, Texas. I will be taking my kids for the weekend and the costumes are supposed to be outrageous down on 6th. We have a rugby game and will be therre anyway, so why not let them see what the college kids are doing with make-up and far fetched outfits? Hoping they enjoy it.

Kathleen W. said...

Just get them some face paints and set them loose. I'm sure they'd love it and come up with something fun.

Laura said...

Great minds think alike. This morning doing dishes I was thinking... "does it make me a bad mom cuz I hate halloween". Since your a great Mom I think the answer is no. LOL!

If I had a flip I would record lot's of those halloween traditions. The ones we do every year... chili and corn bread with family before trick or treating. My kids love halloween.

Bina said...

I am a fall lover, but not so much of Halloween...with five kids as well, it is just so much bloomin' work!!! :)

This year I would be recording a hippie, a movie star, a Lakers player, SuperGirl (if her dad actually lets her out of the house in the tights...) and Alice from Wonderland. *sigh* bracing myself,
Bina

Swirl Girl said...

I WILL be recording (thinking positive, here) Jasmine and Vampiress.

Emmy said...

I would be recording superman and a witch. Luckily this is a cute fancy witch. My two-year-old, the witch, wanted to be a monster.. but I was able to trick her into being something else. :)

kayerj said...

two brothers dressed as batman and a family of vampire princesses.

Nicole @MTDLBlog said...

I love Halloween....but in the last several years, we've only dressed up once for an 80's party we had...that was quite a sight! Jordan is going to be a fairy from Thumbelina and we're going to be......you got it....ourselves! haha. Maybe we can all dress up together next year when the twins arrive ;0)

Janis said...

i am with...I am just not a Halloween person. BUT the rest of my family is so Austin will get to be happy with THEM! LOL. What sucks is his birthday is 2 days after Halloween..so more for me to worry about.

This year we will have a bevy of costumes to film: Headless Horseman, Goofy, Darth Vader, Prince, Princess, Cowgirl, Hollywood Starlet, Ninja, Bunny, Mickey Mouse, just to name a few.

Sevi said...

LOL at hoping your kids don't share with their friends your antics. LOVE IT!

The costumes I would catch on video is the whole cast of Mario Kart Wii. My friends and I are dressing up as all of the characters. We've got Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and Daisy, Yoshi, Toad, and Toadette. Talk about a Halloween to remember!

brunger bunch said...

Funny...I think they already know what a great mom they've got, with or without all of the Halloween drama:)

BeLoVed AiMeE said...

I'd be recording A black Spiderman, A fluffy Puppy, and a tweenager wearing a Candy Corn shirt. Exciting stuff huh?!!

Beth said...

I'd be recording a hippie, Darth Vader and a fairy princess. Oh, and the dog dressed in a pumpkin shirt and sometimes even hubby gets into the fun.

Jeanette said...

I can so relate to you and to prove it I'll tell you that if I had a flip camera I don't even know what costumes I'd be taking pictures of yet. That's right, only a few days left til Halloween and I have no idea what my kids are going to be. Crazy.

Jessica Jones said...

I LOVE a good theme no matter the occasion however I am afraid this will be the last year I can talk (con) my kids into wearing related costumes...however this year I have my very own Ariel, Prince Eric...and prince eric's dog! you know...the shaggy one...ok my oldest wanted to be a dog and that was the only way I could think to tie it in!

Katie said...

My daughter in her Cinderella costume, would be the star of my of my Flip video.

Anonymous said...

If I were the owner a flip, I would be recording a new snow white costume for a my daughter and a 'new' spiderman costume for my son. And by 'new' I only mean that I pulled it from the dress up box, put it in the plastic that my daughters costume came in, then taped it inside a used priority mail box and had my husband bring it in with the other mail!

Jess the photographer behind the lens at JWilsonPix said...

lol.. we have much in common... as I pretty much suck this time of year as well... we havent even done pumkins yet!!! Awful isnt it!!??..

Anyhows.. if I had a flip camera... I would record all the whining and arguing that my kids would do about having to wear their cheer and football uniforms as costumes... and then listen to the happiness of my 4 yr old dressing up as a princess from the dress up box.... all the way through to the well it was ok stuff after the went trick or treating and still came home with candy regardless of how they looked.... =)

Amber D. said...

Oh, my mom always had a HUGE box of halloween costumes and bits and pieces of costumes that we would DRAG out of the back of the closet and ransack through each October. We would have so much fun going through each costume, trying them on, laughing at memories of Halloweens past, and being silly. It is a long standing joke that my mom hated the box because apparently, my brother and sister and I just threw everything all over, and didn't pick up anything- of course I don't remember that part!

This year I would record our little man in his Superman costume (purchased from Ebay) and his buddy in Scooby Doo, who is going trick or treating for the first time. They are both only children and so our son is going to teach the younger one "the ropes"

Momlissa said...

That porch looks eerily familiar. I live in pumpkin patch country, people drive in bumper to bumper traffic to buy our town's pumpkins and take part in its annual festival. And where did I buy our whopping 3 pumpkins? The grocery store. Yep. And did I carve them? No. Do I plan to? No. I love Halloween but the prospect of sticking my hand in goopy pumpkin innards is just not appealing to me.

If I had the FLIP video recorder, I'd be capturing my daughter's many costume changes over the past 3 weeks. She has changed her mind several times on her costume, but I think we're set on Minnie Mouse for now.

The Blonde Duck said...

Hello, fellow Halloween week poster!

I bought our pumpkins at the store too. The one year we went to a pumpkin patch, they rotted in two days!

Unknown said...

Sadly, and I DO mean sadly, I have NO idea what Kaish is going to be! He desperately wants to be a vampire but that is one of the costumes banned from school! Now you would probably think I went out and got another costume since we need something and halloween is only 3 stinking days away, right? Well, no, no I did not! You might find me at the costume store on Saturday morning... or even afternoon. Cause I am the WORST mother in the world... XO

And we haven't even carved our pumpkins yet!

Cynthia said...

There's a terrific street in the wine country that has major decorations. I would go there to photography all the kids in their costumes.

kisatrtle said...

you would be flipping over my little policeman, Mulan and a witch. Personally, I'm thinking about taping some trash to my clothes and going as white trash...LOL if I had a flip I could record this transformation for ya...

MRP said...

Let's see... my daughter will probably be Tinkerbell - again. Although she has more than enough costumes for 12 kids, she always chooses Tinkerbell (one of her 3 Tinkerbell costumes). My son said her wants to go as a ghost.. so I'm good with that - he said he was making his own costume. I can't wait to see that... except he brought in his bed sheet when he said 'making' his own costume. I'm assuming I will have to buy him another sheet soon. What else would he make his 'ghost' out of?!
I could record his step-by-step process of making the costume. ;)

Raise Them Up said...

Let's see. There's Darth Vader, Captain Rex, and your average Joe Clone I'd be video taping this year.

Shannon said...

If it makes you feel any better I am WAYYYY worse than you. The only pumpkins at our house are the 2 mini ones that the preschool teachers brought back from the pumpkin patch field trip I refused tke the girls on. It was 42 degrees and raining....can you blame me?

jen@odbt said...

We've got a bloody skeleton, a princess named Josephine and a clone trooper. I'm still debating on mine - but think I'm going with Ms. PacMan.

Gretchen said...

Well, I would definitely record any unusual costumes. Like my son, for example. He's dressing up as Jesus. Not in a mocking way, but in a serious way. I asked our pastor and he's all for it. He thinks people may believe his parents (us) are "Jesus Freaks" which I could care less about!

Robin said...

I already own (and love) a Flip Ultra and there's no Halloween here so don't count me in the drawing, I just wanted to say how cute the pumpkins were all lined up on the steps like that. Do you think the kids would notice if you left them uncarved ;)?

Unknown said...

That's up in the air - since I'd be recording the tykes and tots that will be appearing at my doorstep Saturday.

Peaches said...

This year we have an artist, Dorothy Gale and Robin the Boy Wonder. I do love Halloween.

Missy Litzinger said...

Unfortunately, my daughter refuses to dress up this year so I am hoping my nephew (aka SPIDERMAN) will stop b.

scrappysue said...

ok, totally forgot to answer the question - but very excited to find out this comp is GLOBAL baby!!! might not be able to link back, but DEF answering all the questions!

i would be using the flip to capture my 11 year old who will be spending halloween with her friend and their extended family - so lots of costume photographing opportunities await - should i win the flip!

Amy @ Six Flower Mom said...

I too am not a huge Halloween an but my mom is a wonderful seamstress! We always had great costumes! Thank goodness she still sews and it rubbed off on my oldest daughter!

We will have 2 feathery chickens, a mad scientist, Alice from Alice in Wonderland and a doppelganger of Alice from Alice in Wonderland! I am not sure what the baby is going to be - something from dress up!

Carma Sez said...

I would be recording my teen in his hamburger costume :D

Jen said...

Don't feel bad. I am the same way. I don't do anything for Halloween. Hayden begs and begs me to decorate for Halloween. Maybe some year but then again maybe not.

As for the question, I have always wanted to be a princess, with the long flowing hair, big gown and maybe even a horse. That is what I would use the Flip to capture. That and me falling off the horse as I tried to get on it. :)

Kelli @ writing the waves said...

Don't feel bad. We are totally recycling costumes and decorations this year. I'm calling it our "green" Halloween. :)

Meredith said...

My 2 year old little girl as a monkey and her 8 week old little brother as a banana! SQUEE!

Beth said...

Your not alone..I wish I were more crafty and all that too. Oh well! What can you do?

Rachel said...

I would take my flip with me out to see all the drunk, dressed up idiots :P then i could show them "see how stupid you were acting"?? :P

Beth said...

Are we suppose to comment on this post or the flip post? I was confused. I would video my Obi-Wan, Butterfly, Stitch, and little witch(baby). Our video camcorder is crappy quality and I bought it last year from Samsung~never do that!

Grand Pooba said...

I always tell myself that I'm going to do some extravigant halloween decor that year but it never happens! I'd like to think that maybe having kids would inspire me to do it, maybe not.

If I had a flip, I'd be recording my cute nephew in his cowboy costume. SO CUTE!

Carissa(GoodnCrazy) said...

Sexy bookmarks there babe.. :)

I already own a flip.. but IF i didn't.. I would video Bumblebee transformer and his dad: Optimus Prime.. :)

Wait I will be videoing that!!

See you at #gno??

Oh dear, only if I had a flip, but I dont =/ so in my imagination, I'd record my little bugs- I have a butterfly, a bee, and a spider at home =o)

Kimberly Kihega said...

I am doing the exact same thing! Money is tight this year, and I can't afford a brand new costume for Halloween.
So, my kids found in the dress-up box a police costume and my son is wearing that rock guy from fantastic four and putting a football jersey over it to be a football player.

It's actually the best costumes we've ever had in my opinion! :)

Anne said...

If I had a Flip this year I would probably be mostly recording the ridiculous things I dress my dog up in. But a few years ago I would have had a great time with that baby at the parade in NYC!!

I would be recording Tinkerbell and Spiderman -- as well as whatever FREAKY costumes the neighbors down the way wear this year. It's always bad. In a really creepy, yet still hilarious way.

Mary said...

I think I would be capturing a grim reaper, Eragon and his dragon, Piglet & Roo, possibly a Kanga & Christpoher Robin if Mommy and Daddy get it together. If I can twist an arm someone might step into a Pooh (just for the camera).

Lee said...

If I had a Flip Camera, I'd be recording a 22 month old black kitty and a 4 year old Spiderman. yes, I caved and bought Spiderman. I still think he would have been so much cuter as a homemade Super Why!, but what's a mama to do???

Crystal said...

Ummm...I would probably be recording my mad dash around the thrift stores on Saturday (yes, that's Halloween day) - because my kids don't have their costumes yet and work has been driving me bonkers and one of my girls has been sick for the last 4 days so I haven't had time to shop for their costumes. Phew.

And pumpkin carving....it's over rated, especially when trying to deal with a 2 1/2 year old who hates pumpkin goo and screams his head off!

The oldest is going to be a monkey and the littlest one will be a spider, if he will wear the costume without crying!

They have a whole year to think of a costume, and maybe try to make their own(with a little mom help);)

I'm going to take a lesson from you - costumes from the dress-up box that already exist!

If I had a Flip, I'd be recording ice. Yes, my son has insisted on being ice. Like the cube. So I'm going as "Don't break the ice" game. Otherwise, nobody would know what the heck my son is - I am not crafty and the costume I made looks more like he will belong in the dump.
