*Wordful Wednesday is for those of us that like to showcase a photo(s) but that just can't seem keep our mouths shut about it(them). If you'd like to play along, post a photo on your blog, and let the words roll. My brother has raised pigeons for as long as I can remember.
I'm afraid that this affinity for pigeons, in particular, somehow runs in the family.
Can you tell?
I would just like to hereby declare that no common nor show nor even a stuffed pigeon shall live at or near my house.
Are you reading this Emma?
Just thought I'd throw that out there before you got any ideas.
Seriously though, my brother raises some pretty amazing varieties of show pigeons, and the variations and interesting characteristics within each breed astounds me. And, on an interesting note, those two pigeons being held by Emma were born on the same day by the same hen. One was rejected by the mother and has been nursed by my brother and his wife while the other (white) pigeon has been taken care of by it's parents. Can you see the drastic difference between their physical development?

Never knew there were show pigeons. Would make for a potentially messy pagaent, huh?
Wow, the difference is amazing and Emma certainly looks very happy! They are all so cute!
I never knew there were show pigeons, either! BTW, your comment was above mine on Confused Homemaker, and I just thought I would tell you since I made the move to WP, I haven't looked back. Although my feeds are still not all updated and I did lose some followers in the process, it's such a whole new bloggy world my friend. Take the leap of faith, you won't regret it.
hey i'm early! dramatic indeed! some things you can't stop - be prepared (and afraid!!!)
WOW! i had no idea either!
Oh that's so sad Angie, about the difference in pigeons.
It reminds me of those poor kids who are in orphanages and have no parents and are just taken care of by volunteers you know.
Man what a difference parenting makes. I wonder why they rejected it?
Anyway I think it's funny you also 'put it out there' for your daughter, you know, just in case she got ideas.
I think it's awesome your brother does it.
Pigeons are fascinating.
Fun post.
Uh oh...is someone going to be asking for a pigeon for Christmas?? LOL!
Oooooh, ooooh, can I get a show pigeon. So cute, never even knew they existed.
Oh my gosh, my husband and I were just talking the other day about how weird it is that we've never seen a BABY pigeon! We see the birds daily everywhere here but never a baby. Actually, I may have seen one once. It was young, but not like just born in your pics.
I can't wait to show him this post!
Oh yeah, and they are soooo cute~!
What, no pigeon farming in your future?
Oh wow, now there's a weird, Ernie and Bert kind of hobby! What does he DO with all of them?
Emma is so thoroughly adorable, I'd almost want to get her a pigeon!
Justine :o )
Yeah, I don't want any pigeons at my house either.
My uncle used to raise pigeons, too --for fun. I thought they were cute for about 3 minutes.
Oh my.. I will not let my kids see this post. lol We have a rule in this house... the kids can't own anything that poops. (With all those pigeons, I bet that's A LOT of poop!) ;)
great pictures. not a fan of pigeons, but i think you do have a budding pigeon raiser. i think it would be neat to have a homing pigeon and strap a note to its foot and send it on its way with a message to a friend, or family member. one of my fav Little House episodes deals with the importance of a pigeon w/ Shannen Doherty's character. happy WW and take care.
Pigeons, eh? That's not strange at all.
Very interesting! I have never given much thought to pigeons until now!
Your daughter is cute as can be!!!
I didn't even know there WERE show pigeons!
Wow...well I learned two things today! Thanks!
Beautiful girl you have there! :)
I had no idea there was something called show pigeons. Looks like she had a great time!!
And here I didn't even know people raised pigeons! They're pretty cute...sure you don't want one? *g*
Cool pictures and very interesting note on those 2 pigeons! I am not a fan of being too near birds of any kind, so I'm gonna put it out there for my kids that no bird of any kind at all shall live inside my house!
hmmm....yup no show pigeons here either - it looks interesting and all, but birds, especially in mass quantity, are icky....And tell your kids how much less fun it would be to visit their unlce if they had their own pigeons to care for.
(really just reading this makes me want to scrub my hands...I had no idea the freaked me out so much!!)
I had no idea you could raise show pigeons. What a fascinating hobby!
She looks thrilled holding those baby pigeons. And yes, the white one is huge compared to the other!
Emma is much braver than me. I like birds...from a distance. LOL
Awww!! I didn't know that the babies could be rejected.
Oh my gosh! I can't imagine raising pigeons! What a unique hobby!
just like real children I guess - we all need nurturing!
That poor little rejected pigeon. So not fair!
At least Emma can visit her Uncle's pigeons! : )
Beautiful! Although I agree with you, not for my family!
Haha for someone else. Yes I agree.
Poor rejected pigeon! At least it has somebody to love it!
I have some friends who raise bees. That is definitely a hobby for someone else and NOT ME.
I totally agree with you! NO pigeons will live in our house either!
Never thought I'd say this but I feel bad for that poor pigeon! Emma looks like she is having a blast. Good thing you handed out the disclaimer. :)
I've never seen such a small pigeon! so cute! stop by
I can not believe the difference in size. WOW! She does look totally enthralled with them, doesn't she? Wow! : )
Aw those are just sweet! We have several chickies running around here that are about that size. lol
How neat. But I don't blame you for not wanting them anywhere near your house.
I think Emma needs a pigeon...
Just sayin'
Very interesting and sad, what kinda momma rejects it's baby! Love the pictures! I don't know Pooba in person can't remember how I found her blog. I moved to SLC my junior year of HS went to Brighton High! We still have our home there, I have one sister and my parents are there in the summers. Rest of my family is in NJ. Hubby and daughter sometimes me are big skiers. I hope to call SLC my home again some day. I really miss the mountains and the friendly people. We are home for three weeks over xmas and I can't wait to get my fill of yummy food, shopping, english movies and visiting friends and family.
I had no idea they had show pigeons. This is quite interesting.
I wouldn't want them at my home either :)
The difference in their growth is pretty dramatic indeed. That's an interesting look into parenting from the outside.
Enjoy your Wednesday!
Ugh, I'm with you - keep those flying rats away from my home and AWAY FROM MY LAUNDRY!!! I live in a city and I had a terrible problem with pigeons pooping all over my clean laundry until our building finally got pigeon netting. Now they just poop all over my rooftop patio. Dang birds.
I love your no pigeon declaration. What are blogs for anyway?
What an interesting hobby to grow up around and how fascinating for your kids to experience (even if only while visiting)
How cool!
Happy WW!
I agree - they are beautiful and fun, bit not on my turf.
They are kind of cute, in their own special way!
WOw that is alot and I would of never guessed WOW
Cute! Amazing the difference in the two!
Awww, they are so cute. I wouldn't have them at my home either, though. I will stick to kitties and doggies. :)
That really is a pretty cool hobby. I'll bet he'd be fun to talk to about it!
Wow...so cool!
How very interesting - and familiar. My husband died earlier this year but he had raised and trained pigeons for 66 years, starting at the age of 12 for a Boy Scout project. We went to a pigeon racing convention last year and had planned to go again this year. The Queen of England has pigeon lofts also; he visited her loft several years ago. I've posted about pigeons several times.
awww poor little grey pigeon. Makes me sad. Glad your brother gives it extra love though! Your daughter looks like she liked holding them! :)
happy ww!
What an interesting hobby. I had no idea that there was such a thing as show pigeons.
I agree cute but not at our house either
That is an interesting hobby. Your daughter seems to love it, hopefully she will be happy just visiting your brother's pigeons.
How cool is that? Well, for someone else of course! ;) It is amazing the difference between the physical development of the two baby pigeons - says a lot, doesn't it? :)
very interesting hobby! birds kinda scare me lol!
p.s. sorry i linked wrong! #85
it's early!!! :(
Wow, that's really cool. No wonder she has an affinity for it. And what gorgeous hair she has!
They are kind of cute when they are little but they still kind of creep me out!
Your daughter is adorable.
As for the pigeons, its the age old question nurture vs. nature. I think nurture by parents always wins!
Happy WW!
That is a brave girl to be touching birds! Hope you are having a good week!
but mom!!!!! come on!
Very neat!
Who knew pigeons could be so fascinating?!?
Blessings!
Cool! Been a while since I have participated, but I am glad to be back! :)
That is so amazing. My Papa (grandfather) use to raise all kinds of birds too. He had a whole sun room with them. Have a great day..
blech. i REALLY dont like pigeons :-/
http://www.aprilslittlefamily.com/2009/12/i-really-want-iphone-but-im-pretty-sure.html
I bet baby pigeons are cute but I am with you, let someone else raise them.
I've never met anyone who raised pigeons. What an interesting hobby! Love the photos!
wow that is so cool
That is cool. I am with you though I like to admire these things from afar. I can appreciate all the work and mess just fine that way :)
How cool! I never knew there were show pigeons.
I would have to agree with not in my house, too. =D
That is pretty cool. But birds freak me out. I blame Hitchcock for that!
huh? Did you say SHOW pidgeons?? Whoa. Other than the nasty things in New York city... I really haven't seen any.. much less a SHOW pidgeon..(grimacing)
Interesting hobby for sure! Never even knew it existed. lol Emma is pretty cute holding them, though! =)
That is so sad. That gray one is so small. What an odd hobby (sorry, it is! lol)
You have an award on my blog!!!
My grandparents used to have a chicken farm...that's kinda the same!
Aw, come on mom, just one?!
That is really cool...for someone else:-)
I didn't know he still had pigeons. Poor Emma. Now what is she going to do for a hobby?
We are a pet free house, so I totally get it. We tried fish, but they are boring and Tess got tired of feeding them. Sooooo, flush! Hope they made it to the sea!
Haha Interesting For other people...that made me laugh outloud! That's kind of cool though, I've never heard of anyone raising pigeons.
wow - I'm with you on that one...at least she can get her fix during visits?!
Neat. Especially from a distance. I'm squirming a little from here. Never even knew there were "show" pidgeons!!
seriously? show pigeons? I never knew that there was such a thing...
Now I do!
I am joining WW for the first time this week..
I did not know there were show pigeons out there in the world either. I learned something new today!
And I saw your comment on my blog, I responded there, but then thought I'd post it here to for you:
"I am glad that I made the switch. It was worth it for me. I like the control, the plug-ins that you can use with it, & the ownership. I also did all the “heavy” lifting of moving it myself & updating the layout over time. But you can hire that out."
If you want you can shoot me an email. It seems like everyone is starting to make the transition over to WP :D
You're so right, that is a funny hobby. I somehow could imagine their cooing as I read your post and it was a little creepy!
